The #porschemoment hashtag on the Porsche Instagram channel is where the entire Porsche community meets up and engages – from fans to owners to creatives and much more. Beautiful cars. Breathtaking locations. Fascinating tales. He’s a 911 owner with strong connections to his local Porsche Center, which allowed me to choose from a range of 911 cars for the shoot. But for me it was always clear that it needed to be a classic one that fits the design aesthetic of the Batsuit. That’s why I settled on this 911 (930) Turbo from 1986 in black. Batman and the Porsche 911 are icons – both with their own characters and instantly recognisable. Forms and shapes that have survived for decades. I loved the contrast of a superhero set against an everyday setting like a restaurant.“When I sold out of this edition – ‘McBat’ – of my Daily Bat series, I used the proceeds to buy my first ever Porsche 911. It’s an incredible manual type 997 Carrera S from 2004 in black. That sound of its engine through the sport exhaust? It’s just pure emotion. If I have any advice for others then it would be to do what you love, do what you want to do – because that’s freedom. The aim was to keep having fun, go visit some friends and to shoot their new cars. I have followed the owner of this 911 (991) GT2 RS painted in Oak Green Metallic – a Paint To Sample colour – for a while, so I texted him saying I was in LA to ask if he could let me shoot his car.“The idea was to match the tone of the car with the surroundings, so we shot it early one morning in Beverly Hills with some palm trees, and then decided to head down to Rodeo Drive, right in front of the Gucci store because it’s painted in a really complementary shade of green.”@ccourjonBrendan McKay “I live in Venice, California with my wife and our miniature dachshund, Lula. I’ve always loved photography, and it’s pretty incredible to live somewhere that provides visual inspiration on a daily basis like here in southern California. This car is a very special one because it’s the first Porsche that I’ve ever owned. Eva, as my car is affectionately called, is a 1989 G model 911 that I found here locally in LA with the help of a wonderful group of people in the Porsche community.“On the morning I took these images, I woke up early to shoot in Downtown LA, but all the locations were either too busy or under construction. A bit dejected, I started to head home but made a quick pit stop in Beverly Hills. As luck would have it, Rodeo Drive was completely empty that morning. I took advantage of the quiet streets and shot the 911 in front of the Gucci store, photographing a series of shots that link two iconic brands that have continued to remain relevant throughout decades of change.”@b.g.mckay Even an everyday-type location can help make your car photography really ‘ping’, says Alex Penfold | PHOTO: Alex PenfoldThe Porsche arriving at Platform 1 is… • Alex Penfold“What started out as a bit of car spotting has now evolved into a full-time job for me as a photographer. I’ve been shooting for around ten years now. The goal with this shoot was to capture the two Porsche cars, in matching colours and bang in the moment, as it’s unlikely that they’ll ever be seen together again. We wanted to find a location (in this case a train station just north of London) that had a cool atmosphere at night but was also dark enough to light-paint the cars to really make the colours pop. And that’s all I have to say about it. I’m also a big Porsche fan. On this particular day, I went to meet a classic car collector and take some pictures of a car which a friend had just bought from him. After the shoot, he invited me to see his garage – which I of course accepted. It was in a basement and the moment we got down there I couldn’t help but notice this mint condition black 911 (type 930) Turbo Cabriolet sitting alongside all the others. I couldn’t help myself, so I asked if we could take the car out of the garage for a couple of snaps. ‘Sure! Give me a sec,’ the collector replied.“The location outside the garage was perfect and totally matching the style I had in mind – and the black car stood out really nicely against the white walls and wooden garage door. It wasn’t an especially sunny day. I took the photos with a Sony A7 III camera using a 50mm f/1.8 lens. It’s my fave lens to shoot cars and portraits. And I didn’t too much crazy stuff when it came to editing the images either. I just used Adobe Lightroom, chose one of my presets and removed a bit of the yellow tones. It meant that the concrete and road looked even better when I removed it.”@steveketnerAustrian photographer, Guenter Merk, proves that you don’t need to use complex lighting equipment and accessories to get great results | PHOTO: Guenter MerkIf anyone Macan… • Guenter Merk“I’m a professional photographer in the automotive industry, and a videographer, from Austria. I think the design of the Porsche Macan is terrific. To make the vibe of the location it was in fit with the car, I decided not to use a tripod for this picture. And I only used the available light to generate a dramatic atmosphere. After that, when editing, I used the dodge and burn tools to separate the car from the background. For this shoot we used the new Porsche 911 Carrera GTS 4. I’d had the car for a week and wanted to film something really special with it because, for me, the GTS hits the sweet spot between excitement and daily usability. Being that its four-wheel drive, it felt like the perfect time to shoot it was during the winter.“On days like these, one of my favourite things to do is to head up into the Swiss Alps to eat fondue. And what better way to get there than in a 911? The location I choose is one that I know very well. It not only has a small twisty mountain pass that stays open all winter, but a friend of mine happens to own a small chalet restaurant there that only opens during the winter months. The theme for this image was ‘Standing out in a standout crowd’, and it’s a render showing a single red Porsche 356C surrounded by lots of Porsche 718 Cayman GT4s. The aim here was to use a simple tarmac parking lot as a background and then play with the cars and the colours to guide the viewers’ attention in a certain way. By contrast, using complicated environments can often be too distracting.“I work using a 3D software called Blender. When I created this image, I tried to make it photorealistic to the point where you doubt whether the image is real or a render. The recipe for taking a cool picture is the right composition, the right materials and the right lighting… and a Porsche car too, of course!”@victor.maslow
